We’re all familiar with the term “snowbird”—someone who comes to enjoy the warm, Florida climate during the winter months when the northern states are unbearable. We also know that the southern summer heat packs quite the punch, but as the temperature creeps up, so do the number of fun things to do around town to beat that heat! Here’s just some of what the snowbirds are missing out on:

  1. Relaxing in the Natural Springs

Did you know that Florida has more natural freshwater springs than anywhere else in the world? The water is clear, refreshing and often offers opportunity to see fish and manatee swimming nearby. Whether you like to swim, kayak or simply float in a tube, these springs are a great way to experience Florida’s tropical beauty while staying cool enough to enjoy it! Check out these affordable and popular springs around Central Florida!

  1. Enjoying Some of the Best Beaches in the Country

Dr. Stephen Leatherman, also known as Dr. Beach, is a leading expert in coastal research. Every year he releases the Top 10 beaches in the U.S. This year, 3 of those top 10 are in Florida, and two of them (including Number 1!) are less than a 2.5-hour drive from Clermont.

  1. #7—Caladesi Island State Park Dunedin in Clearwater
  2. #4—Grayton Beach State Park located in the panhandle
  3. #1—Siesta Beach in Sarasota
  1. Taking Water Activities to the Next Level with Barbeque Donut Boats

If you love a good boat ride and enjoy eating BBQ, this excursion is for you! Enjoy a trip out on the water in a round donut boat featuring a charcoal grill as the centerpiece. Food, drinks, music and anything else you could possibly need are included in these unique party packages. You also have the option to rent a full boat, and bring your own food to cook up on the grill. Check out all the options here!

  1. Cheering on the Orlando City Soccer Team

Our city’s young soccer team has boomed in popularity since its inception in 2015. Their season goes from June to the end of August, so summer is the only time to enjoy this amazing addition to Central Florida culture! Find out more about our home team and getting tickets here.

  1. Adventuring in an “Underwater Playground”

Head south to John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park in the Keys, and go exploring in this approximately 70 nautical square mile attraction.  If neither scuba nor snorkeling flows with you, hop on one of their glass bottom boat tours! Either way, this is an experience worth having! Discover all that you can do at this wonder-filled state park here.

  1. Touring Beautiful Gardens During Azalea Days

Just an hour northeast of Ocala, the Ravine Garden State park features beautiful walking, biking and driving paths. It’s just two weeks until the 21st Annual Azalea Days, which will coincide with the Florida Azalea Festival, so it is a town-wide, fun-filled celebration.

  1. Experiencing a City of Mermaids

Another note-worthy state park and Florida spring is Weeki Wachee, just over an hour west of Clermont. This park boasts being “the only city of live mermaids”, and is well-known for the amazing mermaid shows. In addition, a visit to Buccaneer Bay is included with admission. It’s a water park with water slides, a swimming area and a serene lazy river, all a part of the Weeki Wachee Spring. Get more information for visiting this must-see park here.

  1. Exploring Indoors at the Florida Aquarium

Tampa is home to the Florida Aquarium where you can visit exhibits, go on a wild dolphin cruise or enjoy one of the many shows they put on for guests. This summer they are opening The Splash Pad, a wet & dry outdoor play area for children, making it a perfect summer outing for you and the grandkids.

These are just 8 drops in a bucket of fun Florida outings. The sunshine state has so much more to offer during the summer than heat, and we’d love to get out there and have fun with you.
