Even after seven years of helping teach more than 100 students how to play chess, Jim Mayo still finds fulfillment in teaching children the game.

"It's a really fun game to play," Mayo said. "I enjoy trying to get other people interested in the game. It really does teach you a lot."

Every Tuesday afternoon, Mayo heads a Chess Club meeting at the Fruitland Park Library designed to help children learn how to play.

Eleven-year-old Caleb Ryan, who has been learning how to play chess for almost a year, said that these weekly meetings have improved his game.

"Chess helps me calm down," Ryan said. "It gives me more concentration and helps me learn about strategy."

Mayo also hosts a chess club catered to adults that meets Thursday afternoons at the Leesburg Public Library.
