According to Florida Health, you'll want to follow these 6 key steps:

1. Create an Emergency Plan

Know your evacuation route and have a list of emergency contacsts.

2. Gather Emergency Supplies

Ready a kit with nonperishable food, bottled water, first aid kit, flashlight and batteries, battery powered radio and a multi-purpose tool.  

3. Secure Your Home

Minimize potential damage to your home by inspecting and repairing things like windows, doors and roof; make sure you have a hurricane-rated garage door or use bracing kits to reinforce it; keep trees and shrubs trimmed and free of any dead or weak branches; and bring in or secure all outdoor items. 

4. Stay Informed

Monitor weather updates and know your alerts (watch vs warning); register for local emergency alerts to be sure you receive updates directly to your phone. 5. Prepare Your Vehicle

Keep up your regular maintenance and also carry an emergency kit in your car. And when there’s pending weather, get fuel early and often as needed.

Hurricane Season & 2026 Projections

Hurricane season is from June 1 to November 30, though peak activity is usually August to October, with September being the most active month. 

For 2026, the National Weather Service has predicted above-normal hurricane activity based on conditions in the Atlantic basin such as warmer ocean temperatures and wind shear forecasts.
