The Ideal DayCation: Here’s How

For an Ideal Daycation Wearing a Versatile Blue Denim Coat Dress from Who What Wear and Target fits the bill

Versatile Blue Denim Coat Dress from Who What Wear and Target

The weather has been positively glorious lately. I am totally ready to create an ideal daycation. The sun shines brightly, the air is clear,–except for the pollen–our temperature hovers comfortably in the upper seventies, and all the lovely bliss is topped of with a light breeze and blooming flowers. Around here, we love a good DayCation, taking the day to visit a nearby community–some we’ve visited several times before, and sometimes we get all adventurous and try something completely new. I love immersing myself in our nearby communities, taking note of new shops, art, and restaurants. In short, I love to pretend I’m a tourist in my own town.

Versatile Blue Denim Coat Dress from Who What Wear and Target

Seeing the community with the eyes of a guest simply evokes gratitude for the beauty of this area, especially since I am often too busy to notice how beautiful this world really is. I feel like a kid again, exploring new shops, delighting in a delicious treat, or enjoying an old favorite, looking forward to a meal and a favorite restaurant.

For me, the ideal dacation inspiration usually starts with either my wardrobe or the community we plan to visit. I think of the feel of the community, a color or style that evokes a theme that sets my imagination soaring–I’m sorry–I’ve always had my head in the clouds to some degree, and clothes and beautiful or fun destinations get all my creative juices flowing.

Who What Wear Blue Denim Coat Dress from Target

Whether we visit a beautiful home, hotel or town, I love the details that make the location unique, and I feel the same about putting looks together–sometimes the simplest of dresses with interesting accessories make the outfit, just like one may think a place is a place–until you notice the unusual architecture, or the colors or the flowers.

In any event, I am full of ideas, inspiration, and deep appreciation. And ready for my Ideal DayCation.

A 5-Step Guide to Boosting Your Energy

A 5-Step Guide to Boosting Your Energy

March 24th, 2017

How to Get More Energy In Your Everyday Life

Energy levels dictate so many other habits—whether or not we eat healthy and work out, for example. A lot of women come to me with questions about how to deal with their energy fluctuations, especially during times of hormonal changes. While some factors are out of our control, there are a lot of things we can do to help our body out and create more sustained energy in our day-to-day lives.

1. Eat the Right Foods

As you’ve probably experienced, there are certain foods that give you more energy than others. More specifically, different foods give you different types of energy. For example, we all know that if you have too much sugar, you get a burst of energy that quickly leaves you feeling more exhausted than before. So what are the foods that give you long-lasting energy? It’s the foods that are rich in complex carbohydrates, protein, antioxidants, fiber, vitamins, and minerals. That covers a lot of foods, but here’s a quick list of some of my favorites:

  • Healthy proteins like salmon or chicken
  • Healthy fats like nuts, avocados, and olive oil
  • Whole grains
  • Fruits like bananas, blueberries, strawberries, and mango
  • Spinach
  • Sweet potatoes
  • Peppers and tomatoes

2. Eat the Right Way

Almost as important as what you eat is how you eat it. Make it a rule to NEVER skip a meal. It’s actually much better for your body to have many smaller meals throughout the day, and going too long without fuel is a sure way to sink your energy levels.

It’s also important to eat a combination of foods that include the small amounts of healthy fats, protein, and complex carbohydrates that we listed above. These nutrients work together to create the right type of long-lasting energy that your body needs.

3. Move More

Movement and energy work together cyclically: When you’re tired, you don’t move, and then you get more tired. When you have energy, you move more, and then you get more energy. So if you’re in the non-moving cycle, all you have to do is break it with some movement! Here are some easy ways to add movement into your day:

  • Keep a cup or bottle of water at your desk, and make sure it’s always full. This will ensure that you’re getting up and walking to refill your water regularly (and it also keeps you hydrated!).
  • Go for a brisk walk at lunchtime or any other time you have a short break. Even a five minute walk makes a big difference.
  • Take the stairs EVERY chance you get.
  • Make sure to stand up and stretch at least once per hour to get your blood flowing.
  • 4. Adjust Your Attitude

Your mental state can be half the battle when it comes to energy, and for better or worse, it also contributes to the energy cycle. If your mind is lethargic, it can influence your body, which can reinforce your mental state. So here’s what I do when I find myself in a bad mood:

  • I take a step back. I try to objectively view my mental state and figure out why I’m thinking negatively.
  • Once I’ve identified the reason or pattern, I make a conscious effort to focus on the positive side of whatever situation I’m in.
  • Then, I use my body to influence my mind. I force myself to smile, and believe it or not, it actually changes my state of mind! Try it! It’s so simple, and you can do it anytime, anywhere.

5. Energize With Your Breath

Finally, I want to talk about breathing. Getting enough oxygen into your cells is so important for your energy. Increasing your energy can be as simple as a quick breathing exercise. Here’s one that I like:

  • Right now, take a deep breath. Breathe in through your nose, and then slowly exhale through your nose.
  • Repeat at least 3 more times.
  • How do you feel? With each breath, you delivered energy-rich oxygen to every cell in your body.
  • If you don’t feel relaxed or energized yet, try a few more deep breaths.

Try to incorporate some of these tips into your daily life and see what kind of effect it has on your energy. Remember—energy is not just created by one thing. It’s the combination of the right healthy habits, and we can constantly improve in every little area of our lives.

Your Spring Guide to Seasonal Eating

Your Spring Guide to Seasonal Eating

March 10th, 2017

Eating seasonally is great for your body, taste buds, and wallet. Since spring is just over a week away, we’re going to talk about some of the best things you can buy and eat during this wonderful season. But first, let’s dive a little deeper into the reasons behind seasonal eating.

Why Eat What’s In Season?

The difference is always clear to me between a piece of fruit that is fresh and one that has been chilled and held in a warehouse before it got to my home. When produce is fresher, you get more of its nutrients. It has had time to ripen in the sun for longer, which makes it tastier as well as healthier. The wonderful flavors of freshly grown fruit and vegetables make it my favorite reason to eat seasonally. After all, we’re more likely to eat what’s good for us when it tastes great, so that’s enough reason alone to eat what’s in season!

As a bonus, it’s also more cost effective to eat seasonally because of the simple law of supply and demand. Produce that’s in season is generally more abundant, and therefore more affordable.

Spring Produce

Before we jump into the specifics, I want to remind you of one more thing: What’s harvested by season can vary by location. For a look into your local seasonal harvest, you can go to your farmer’s market or do a quick Google search for local and seasonal produce. But for now, here is a broad list of fruits and vegetables that are typically in season in the spring:

Artichokes

Arugula

Asparagus

Beets

Bok Choy

Carrots

Cherimoyas

Fava Beans

Garlic

Leeks

Salad Greens

Mangos

Morel Mushrooms

Peas

Potatoes

Radishes

Ramps (wild onions)

Rhubarb

Scallions

Spinach

Spring Onions

Two Easy Ways to Incorporate Spring Produce Into Your Diet

Here are two of my favorite spring recipes—they present a wonderful opportunity to eat some of the tastiest produce fresh and raw.

Spring Salad with Olive Oil Dressing

Salad Ingredients:

1 cup arugula

1 cup spinach

1 cup romaine

3 carrots

3 large tomatoes, diced

1 large bulb fennel, diced (discard tops)

1 cup fresh chopped basil leaves

1 large onion of your choice, diced

1 large cucumber, diced

Dressing Ingredients:

¼ cup extra-virgin, cold-pressed olive oil

½ cup red wine vinegar

2 T. Dijon mustard

¼ cup freshly chopped basil leaves

2 T. balsamic vinegar

2 cloves garlic, pressed

Salt and freshly ground pepper, to taste

Directions:

  1. Prepare Salad: Wash greens and spin-dry or dry between paper towels. Place in a large bowl. Add all other vegetables, except tomatoes, and mix well. Set aside to make dressing.

  1. Prepare Dressing: Pour olive oil into a large glass jar with a tight-fitting lid. Add red wine and balsamic vinegars, mustard, garlic, and basil leaves. Place lid on jar. Shake well to mix all ingredients. Add salt and pepper to taste.

  1. Serve: Add tomatoes and dressing to the salad, toss well, and serve cold. Enjoy!

Spring Green Smoothie

Ingredients:

1 cup fresh mango (or 8 oz. mango juice)

1 ½ cups fresh spinach

1 ½ cups fresh kale

1 T. chopped fresh ginger root

Ice cubes

Directions:

Place all ingredients in a high-powered blender. Mix until well blended. Pour into a glass and store unused portion in a covered glass or thermos in the refrigerator. Serve and enjoy!

The Best Swimsuits for Women 2017

Shopping for swimsuits used to be my favorite part of the spring and summer shopping season. I’ve enjoyed wearing the skimpiest of swimsuits, and all sorts of styles in between, so long as it was a two piece. To my mind, one piece swimsuits were for children and old women, not for me.

2000 heralded many changes for me, a major one being the birth of my daughter. I was struggling with baby weight, and not feeling particularly–sexy beach babe–and worst of all, I was undergoing a major fashion/identity crisis. My work wardrobe hung, untouched in stately grandeur in my closet, while a pile of dirty yoga pants and shapeless t shirts awaited a good wash. I had cut my hair to a chin length bob since handfuls had fallen out postpartum, and my tummy…oh we don’t want to go there…with a hairstyle I hated, and my postpartum body looking like a deflated balloon, I felt, dare I say it: ugly.

So the next major change of 2000 was…drum roll please…I decided I would no longer wear a two piece swimsuit in public. And, for the record, I wasn’t 80, I was 40, which had a way of adding insult to injury. I had developed such an aversion to one piece swimsuits that, as odd as that may sound, I felt like a part of me was lost, a part that had been fun, carefree, and youthful. After the grief subsided, I decided I wasn’t going to let the one piece situation hold me too far back: I would look for the most beautiful swimsuits I could find, and I would get my sexy back…someday.

Hello! tankinis, vintage styles, and exotic cutouts! Hola! asymmetrical and strapless tops! Bonjour! Low back and interesting back details, and cover-ups–we are now best friends. That first swim season took me to Nordstrom, where I bought a brown halter tankini with a beautiful turquoise broach at the base of it’s low V. It had all that hold everything in magic, so I looked–ok. I was still 30 lbs overweight, and had that ugly hair cut, but I was an elegant 30 lbs overweight, thank you!

That elegant brown suit saw me through two more seasons before I lost my baby weight, but I kept it for several years longer because the top was so flattering, I wore it with white jeans and boy was it cute! (Yes, I even make my swim suits do double duty–clothing works hard in my household!)

After the elegant brown tankini, and my 30 pound weight loss, I was actually excited to try more one piece swimsuits. Here are a few favorites!

Making Time for Date Night at Home

One of my favorite things to do with the people I care about is to set up special date nights to make sure we’re getting our quality time together. It’s easy to get caught up in our busy day-to-day tasks and responsibilities and assume that your normal interactions with your loved ones are enough, but it’s so important, in any relationship, to set aside time devoted specifically to that relationship. Not only does it show the other person you care, but it also forces you to stop and really appreciate the people in your life.

While it can be a ton of fun to get dressed up and go out to eat for date night, it’s sometimes even more fun to make cooking part of your time together. Whether I’m setting up a date night with my husband or with a girlfriend, I have some great go-to recipes that make it feel like a special occasion.

Here are two of my favorite date night dinners. And if you want to add a dessert to your date night, go for it! Just remember, everything is okay in moderation, so don’t overdo it. Try out these recipes and let me know what you think! What desserts did you make to go with them? Enjoy!

5 Ways to Make Listing Photos Pop!

Listing photos are crucial when selling a home and presenting it online to potential suitors. The New York Times recently featured several suggestions from professional stagers and interior photographers on how to achieve a picture-perfect home, including:

Trim the belongings
"Instead of having lots of little things along a countertop or table, have one bold vessel or large plant, or a trio of objects that read as one whole," says Laure Joliet, a photographer based in Los Angeles. "This helps anchor the photo and keeps the space feeling serene."

Keep plants and knick-knacks away from windowsills and off the piano top or coffee tables. In the kitchen, clear away all the refrigerator magnets, paper towels and majority of small appliances. Before taking a photo in the bathroom, open the shower curtain, close the toilet lid, and remove all toiletries from counters. Keep everything clutter-free.

Harness the light
Wash the windows and open the curtains or pull up the blinds, suggest photographers. "Natural light allows for depth in the shadows and highlights in the window, which makes a room look the way it feels," Joliet says. "It can make your real estate photos look that much more high-end and designed."

Add in pops of color
Accents like colorful flowers or a throw pillow can help enhance photos. "Instead of a fussy bouquet, a vase filled with one type of flower or greens is best," Joliet says. She recommends eucalyptus branches.

To drape a throw: Grab the middle of the blanket and hold it up so that it cascades evenly down. Place it diagonally at the foot of the bed "with the point up toward the long side of the bed and the fringes hanging slightly off the front," says Donna M. Dazzo, president of Designed to Appeal, a home-staging firm. To drape it over an armchair, tuck the bottom behind a throw pillow or allow the throw to cascade off the arm, she says.

Hang artwork lower
"We tend to place our art a little bit lower than maybe somebody would in personal use, because in a photo, if you place it too high, the ceiling looks very low," David C. Salvatore, creative director for Edge Mid-Century Designs in Clifton, N.J., told The New York Times. "Everyone loves high ceilings – and certainly, if you have the ceilings, you need to put in a huge vertical piece to make sure you show the height."

Focus on curb appeal
Prune overgrown trees, particularly those that are obscuring the view of the house in any way, Alberto Lau, a real estate photographer in San Diego, says. "Take the cover off the barbecue grill unless it is hopelessly rusty, in which case it's better to move it [out of] the frame of the photo," he says. Keep cars away from the front of the house or driveway (place cones or signs, if necessary, to keep others away from parking in the front the day you shoot). Make sure the leaves are raked and trash bins hidden from view.

Scam alert: Never say the word "yes" when robocall rings

If you still have a landline phone, make sure you aren't snared in the latest robocall scam.

Anyone who still has a traditional home phone dreads the hated robocall. As part of the latest scam, the caller, instead of mentioning who they are, instead asks, "Can you hear me?" That could be a sign that a scammer is on the other end of the line.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) on Monday issued a consumer alert against just such scammers. When a caller says, "yes," that they can hear the robocall, their reply is recorded and used to authorize fraudulent charges via telephone on the victim's utility or credit card account, the FCC says.

The scam is prevalent, based on complaints the agency has received and from news reports across the U.S. The fraudulent callers might impersonate familiar organizations to get you to answer and talk.

"Robocalls are the No. 1 consumer complaint to the FCC from the public. And it's no wonder: Every month, U.S. consumers are bombarded by an estimated 2.4 billion robocalls," FCC Chairman Ajit Pai said last week at the agency's March meeting, during which the commission voted to begin a rulemaking process to eliminate robocalls.

"Not only are unwanted robocalls intrusive and irritating, but they are also frequently employed to scam our most vulnerable populations, like elderly Americans, out of their hard-earned dollars," Pai said.

What should you do, according to the FCC? Hang up immediately. Or better yet, don't answer a call from an unknown number.

If you have gotten such a call, review your credit card and telephone bills as well as your bank statement for unauthorized charges.

Anyone who thinks they have been targeted by this scam should immediately report the incident to the Better Business Bureau's Scam Tracker and the FCC Consumer Help Center.

Other FCC robocall tips:

  • Hang up if a caller asks you to hit a button to stop receiving calls. It's often a recording. Scammers often use that tactic to identify and target live respondents.
  • If you do answer what winds up being a scam call, write the number down and add that to your FCC complaint.
  • Ask your telephone company if it has a robocall blocking service. If it doesn't, recommend it get one.
  • Register all your telephone numbers in the National Do Not Call Registry.

5 smart reminders for your home sellers

March 23, 2017 – Besides staging, sellers also should take a few more steps to ease the stress of their sale. Realtor.com® offers up some of the following often-overlooked tips:

1. Highlight improvements and any issues.

"If you've owned your home for a while, make a list of all the problems you've solved for a while, make a list of all the problems you've solved while you've lived there," suggests Avery Boyce, a real estate pro with Compass Real Estate in Washington, D.C. For example, be ready to disclose any potential past issues like chimney fires, water damage, or a flood in the basement. Disclose "invisible improvements," such as a French drain system, too, says Boyce.

2. Google your address.

Nearly all buyers now search online for homes, and sellers need to be aware of how their listing looks on the Internet too. For example, Google Maps' street view may not show your recent home improvements, so you'll want to flag those updates in your listing. Also, "is the site's estimated value very different from your asking price? It might be because tax records have the wrong information about the number of bedrooms or bathrooms your house has, and this is easily fixed," says Boyce.

3. Test out the doorbell.

A lack of cosmetic repairs, even seemingly minor, can cost you a sale. "First impressions make all the difference," says Marianne Leonard Cashman, a real estate professional with William Raveis Real Estate in Andover, Mass. "A well-kept home, starting with the view from the curb, gives the perception that the seller has great pride in the home and has taken good care of it –which translates into less energy and costs for the buyer as they prepare to move in."

4. Clean everything.

Buyers are going to snoop everywhere, from inside drawers and cabinets to even the dishwasher. They are going to judge how clean everything is, too. "Spending the money on a service to deep-clean your home will come back to you at least 10 times in your sales price," says Boyce.

5. Designate which items aren't included in the sale.

If the custom window treatments aren't included, sellers need to be sure to let their agent know. "The law says that anything bolted to the wall or ceiling goes to the buyer unless specifically excluded in the contract," says Boyce. "If you want to take your flat-screen TV, chandelier, or custom pot rack, be sure to label it as soon as the house goes on the market, so that buyers don't bank on owning that item and wind up disappointed."
